Essential information you need to know before traveling to Koh Lipe Koh Lipe

As with any other trip, questions about transportation, finances, internet, SIM, vaccinations and more arise before the Koh Lipe trip. So let’s take a look at the basic information you need to know.
Visa
Many travelers can enter Thailand under a visa exemption and stay for up to 30 days for tourism purposes. However, this exemption does not apply to all countries; some must apply for a visa prior to departure. So always check the conditions for the country whose passport you hold before you travel.
To enter Thailand, all travelers must show proof of 20,000 Baht in cash per person or 40,000 Baht per family. While we have never been asked for this proof when traveling from Langkawi, immigration officers have the right to request it. Additionally, they may ask for proof of your departure from Thailand and can refuse entry if you do not have it.
When to go to Koh Lipe
The best time to visit Koh Lipe is during the dry season, from November to April, when the weather is sunny and the sea is calm. However, peak season (Christmas, New Yar) can be crowded, so consider visiting in shoulder months like early November or February for fewer crowds and still great weather.
The rainiest period is from June to the end of September, making travel to Koh Lipe less advisable during these months (direct connections from Langkawi to Koh Lipe are also unavailable). In other months, like October, November, April, and May, there may be some rain, but it typically consists of short showers.
How long to stay at Koh Lipe
If you are really short on time, you can travel from Langkawi to Koh Lipe in a roundabout way — taking a morning boat to Koh Lipe and an afternoon boat back to Langkawi. However, you will only have about 2 hours on the island, which may not be worth the price of ferry tickets.
In our experience, a minimum of two nights is ideal. The maximum length of stay is up to you, but it’s important to know that Koh Lipe is tiny with limited activities. Unless you’re strictly a beach person, 2 to 4 nights will suffice. However, if you want to fully enjoy the beaches, consider staying for 5 to 7 nights.

Where next from Koh Lipe
From Koh Lipe, you can return to Langkawi or continue your journey through Thailand. Here’s how:
- By boat + land: Take a speedboat from Koh Lipe to Pak Bara port. From there, you can travel to other destinations in Thailand. For example, you can go to Hat Yai and then fly to Bangkok, or to Krabi, which is an interesting stop and a transfer point for the islands, Khao Sok National Park, and other destinations with bus or air connections.
- By boat: From Koh Lipe, you can take a speedboat to islands like Koh Bulon, Koh Tarutao, Koh Kradan, Koh Muk, Koh Ngai, Koh Lanta, Phi Phi, and Phuket. Check the timetable below or search for connections via 12GoAsia.
Vaccination
Have you ever been on holiday or lived in a country where yellow fever is present? If so, a yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for Thailand. No other vaccinations, including Covid-19, are required. Hepatitis and typhoid vaccinations are considered travel essentials, but getting them is entirely up to you. A rabies vaccination is not necessary, as animals typically won’t attack without reason. Avoid risky behavior like feeding animals to minimize the chance of being bitten. However, ensure you have good quality travel insurance and discuss vaccinations with your doctor, who knows your medical condition.
Internet and SIM
Internet in Thailand is as affordable as in Malaysia, and signal coverage is excellent for most needs throughout the country, including Koh Lipe. If you’re only staying on Koh Lipe for a few days, Wi-Fi in hotels and restaurants might be sufficient. However, if you want constant connectivity, buy a Thai SIM card from a 7/11 store with the data and calling package you need. Alternatively, you can add a roaming package to your Malaysian SIM card before leaving Malaysia.
Another option is the Airalo eSIM, which you can conveniently order online. The process is simple and takes just a few minutes, allowing you to secure your eSIM before you travel. Once purchased, activate the eSIM function in your phone’s settings, and you’ll be online as soon as you arrive on Koh Lipe. Airalo’s virtual eSIM for Thailand costs $9.90 for 8 days of unlimited data and $19.95 for 15 days of unlimited data. You can order the Airalo virtual eSIM at this link.
ATM, currency exchange
There are several ATMs on Koh Lipe where you can withdraw money. ATM withdrawals are charged at 220 Baht. So it is better to withdraw money in Langkawi, where local banks do not charge withdrawal fees, and then exchange it at a money exchange office. There are exchange offices in the Cenang area with good rates and reliable services, we can reccommend the one in Maybank in Cenang Mall. The same applies to exchange offices on Koh Lipe, which you can find along Walking Street.
Don’t leave money exchange to the last minute. There is no currency exchange at Telaga Harbour in Langkawi, and it can be difficult to find an open exchange office at 8 AM in Cenang (if you are taking morning ferry). If you are coming from Kuah Harbour, there is an exchange office there, but we recommend not relying on it.
By the way, to enter Koh Lipe, you need to pay the entrance fee for Koh Tarutao National Park. This fee can only be paid in cash, but it doesn’t have to be in Baht; you can also pay in the equivalent of EUR, USD, or MYR. So, if you don’t already have Baht when you enter Thailand, it’s not a big deal.
Looking for a secure way to pay when you travel? Revolut is an excellent card for paying in Thailand and elsewhere abroad, offering very good rates, unlimited free card payments, and a range of other benefits for travelers.
Plus, if you use the Revolut virtual card in conjunction with Apple Pay or another wallet, you get a very secure way to pay. This way, you don’t have to use your bank’s card at all and can just keep it as a backup, ideally somewhere away from your other cards.
Prices at Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe is more expensive than other places in Thailand, but not dramatically so. For basic necessities like food and drink, budget around 500 to 1 000 Baht per person per day. Spending can be significantly lower—costs can be reduced to 300 Baht per day or even less if you save a lot. However, to avoid cutting back too much, it’s better to plan for a higher amount. If you want to enjoy evening drinks at a bar, get a massage, eat fish and seafood, or shop for souvenirs, add another 500 to 1 000 Baht per person per day to your budget.
If you want to save money, buy cheap alcohol at one of Langkawi’s duty-free shops before your trip. However, be aware of import limits — you can bring a maximum of 1 litre of liquor per person into Thailand.

What to pack for trip to Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe is a beach destination, so you won’t need to bring much with you. Like other places in Thailand or Malaysia, there are laundries available on Koh Lipe, so you only need to pack a minimum of clothes. I recommend lightweight clothing made from breathable natural materials such as linen, bamboo, cotton, or hemp. These materials are better than synthetic fabrics, as they won’t cause excessive sweating. Essential items include sunglasses, sunscreen with a high sun protection factor, a hat or cap, and for women, a lightweight beach cover-up to protect against sunburn. Repellent is also important, but you can buy this on Koh Lipe or upon arrival in Thailand — a local citronella-based one is best.
What to watch out for
Koh Lipe is a small island and as such is generally safe, but there are still a few things to watch out for:
- Do not leave rooms and bungalows unlocked when you leave.
- Drink bottled water or water from vending machines, as tap water is not drinkable.
- Do not overexpose yourself to the sun—be aware that you can get sunburned even in the shade or under a cloud.
- Maintain a proper drinking regimen; insufficient water intake can cause dehydration, exhaustion, diarrhea, and other health problems.
- Koh Lipe is a protected area and a national park, so it is important to follow conservation rules. These include not damaging, touching, or stepping on corals or other marine animals and not taking shells or corals from the beach, even if they are dead.
- Most accommodations have a limited number of plugs. If you need to charge multiple devices at once, consider bringing chargers for two USB cables.
- Thai plugs may differ from those in your country, so an adapter is handy. You can bring one or buy one in local shops.
- The mobile signal is sufficient for normal needs, but if you require super-fast internet for large data transfers, you may encounter issues. Plan your work accordingly.
- Thais are friendly, but insulting, defacing, or disrespecting temples, the king, and national symbols can get you into serious trouble.
- Being unpleasant or arrogant is not advisable. Always treat the locals with respect and dignity.

Transportation on Koh Lipe mainly involves walking or using longtail boats to explore surrounding islands or reach remote beaches. Taxis are not available since the island is compact and easily navigable on foot or by boat. However, if you prefer not to walk, you can take a Tuk Tuk for a few Baht.
Koh Lipe is a small island, so bicycles and motorbikes are not commonly rented. The island is easily navigable on foot, and most attractions are within walking distance. For exploring nearby islands such as Koh Adang, Koh Rawi or Koh Hin Ngam, longtail boats are the preferred mode of transportation.
Koh Lipe has basic medical facilities, including clinics and pharmacies that can handle minor ailments and injuries. For serious emergencies, patients may need to be transferred to hospitals on nearby islands like Langkawi or to the mainland in Satun. For case of emergency it’s always a good idea to have high-quality travel insurance.

If you’re heading back to Malaysia from Thailand, make sure you don’t have any cannabis in your pockets, bags, etc., and definitely don’t carry any on purpose. Marijuana is illegal in Malaysia, and you can face penalties for possession. The same applies to other countries neighboring Thailand.

In low season, you can book accommodation just a few days in advance, or you can get it on the spot. For peak season, especially if you’re planning to stay in December around Christmas and New Year, and then during Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Songkran, book a few months in advance (ideally with the option to cancel in case you can’t go). Only the most expensive options will be left to you at the last minute – prices during peak and high season can be significantly higher! We recommend using Agoda.com to book.
Locations
There are two main large beaches on Koh Lipe – Sunrise and Pattaya. On Pattaya is the main harbour and immigration department, from Sunrise depart long tail boats for daily trips. There are restaurants, bars and resorts along both beaches, so these are the busier parts – but there is less traffic of people and boats on the edges. Considerably quieter is Sunset beach, which is divided into several smaller beaches with only a few resorts. Cheaper accommodation can be found in the middle of the island around Walking Street.

Activities at Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe is a relaxing beach destination that doesn’t offer many activities. However, you don’t have to just lie on the beach. There are a few options for the more active travelers:
- Rent a paddleboard or kayak and explore the immediate area. Just take a walk along the beach and you’re bound to come across a rental shop. Some of the more expensive hotels provide free sports equipment. As you explore the island, you’ll find beautiful, unspoiled beaches!
- Practice yoga at Keirita’s Yoga and Diving or Castaway Resort.
- Take taxi boat and go to the opposite island of Koh Adang and hike out to the viewpoint. The main long tail boat dock is on Sunrise Beach in front or Varin Village resort. Bring sturdy shoes and plenty of water.
- Take a snorkeling or fishing trip around the surrounding islands and islets, such as Koh Rawi or Koh Hin Ngam. You’ll find offerings all along the main Walking Street, or you can rent a taxi boat.
- Take a trip to Koh Tarutao. You can buy boat tickets at the harbour. If you enjoy nature and quiet beaches without bars and crowds, consider a longer stay.
- Snorkel, scuba dive, or take a scuba diving course. Again, you’ll find a wide range of options on Walking Street.
- Go for a Thai massage, we can recommend those in Salisa or Bundhaya resort.
- Check out the small Buddhist temple. It’s nothing big, just a few statues and prayer spots scattered in the forest, but the atmosphere is very nice.
- Walk to the lesser-known and more secluded Galah Beach.
- Get a tattoo. Whether you want a souvenir from your holiday or are a tattoo lover, Thailand is the perfect destination. Bamboo tattoo is traditional Thai tattoo and take less time to heal than machine tattoos. You can swimming the very next day. For tattoo, we recommend Yantramantra Tattoo Koh Lipe.
- Hang out at one of the bars, for example Jimmy’s Bar, where the atmosphere is super chill. For watching the sunset with a cocktail in hand, Zodiac is great. Other bars can be found along both beaches or on Walking Street.
